Winter 2016 Stream: Myriad Colors Phantom World: Episode 4
An episode with an actual emotional trajectory in wich Reina becomes possessed by a spirit that presents her with an idealized version of her otherwise emotionally distant parents as small anthropomorphic rabbits. In short it's a "lotus eater" type of world that Mai and Haruhiko get stuck in as well it gives a way for the series to finally feel emotionally real and not a lost pile of tropes and archetypes. The series has come around to being well written as well as well animated while the dark turn near the end makes it more than a Japanese High School version of Scooby Doo with a monster of the week narrative structure it's now allowed for character development and actual emotional range beyond Mai being a hot head or Haruhiko being a font of exposition. While Reina is now more than a mere cute little Ojou and has some pain in her past. While it's solved quickly thankfully though the use of the "power of friendship" trope does not make it all feel hollow or quickly fixed.
